Trump testified on Thursday about a significant meeting between Mr. Trump and his personal lawyer that is at the center of Mr. Trump’s criminal trial, the first prosecution of a former American president. Ms. Westerhout will return to the stand Friday, facing additional questions from Mr. Trump’s legal team. She took questions Thursday after two days of sometimes graphic and frequently heated testimony by Ms. Daniels. Ms. Daniels denied repeated accusations by Mr. Trump’s lawyers that she was motivated by money in divulging the sexual encounter, and that her account on the stand was inconsistent with others she has given in the past. Merchan sanctioned Trump for violating his gag order for nine posts and reposts on his Truth Social site and campaign website, targeting witnesses and jurors in his Manhattan prosecution. In his written order, summarized from the bench at the start of the trial on Tuesday, the judge also warned Trump that if he persists in violating the gag order, he faces jail time. Perhaps the new sanctions — or those likely to come in response to the newest four allegations of gag order violations — will be the end of it. As I have previously explained, Trump’s argument that the gag order infringes his First Amendment rights is specious. In any event, even if Trump believes those things, that is no excuse under New York law to violate a court order.

Two years ago, a group of election deniers ran for office in Arizona, with Kari Lake’s campaign for governor topping the ticket. It turned out, though, that the small matter of losing was not going to keep election deniers out of the spotlight, nor away from key roles in the Arizona Republican Party and beyond. Former President Donald J. Trump was named as an unindicted co-conspirator on Wednesday in the investigation by the Michigan attorney general’s office into interference in the 2020 election. Charges have already been brought in Michigan against 15 Republicans who acted as fake electors for Mr. Trump after President Biden defeated him in the state in 2020. During pretrial hearings in the case this week in Lansing, a special agent for the attorney general’s office, Howard Shock, said the investigation was still open. He named a number of people he said had taken part in the conspiracy but have not been indicted, including Mr. Trump; Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff, and Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer. Defense lawyers for the Michigan fake electors, and some of the electors themselves, have been critical of the actions of the Republican Party and the 2020 Trump campaign, saying that lawyers and operatives had led the fake electors astray.
